PAST SIMPLE OR CONTINUOUS?

2. Last Saturday Tom wanted to make two salads. He ................................... (make) the first one in five minutes. He .................................... (make) the second one when his guests ............................ (arrive) and they .............................. (help) him to finish it.
3. The artist Gaudi ............................... (design) several houses in Barcelona, Spain. Later he ............................... (start) work on a church. He ................................. (work) on the church when he .............................. (die).
4. Last month a bank robber ................................... (escape) while the police ...................................... (take) him to prison. Later they ................................ (catch) him again, and this time they ........................................ (lock) him up without any problem.

1) Beethoven wrote (write) nine symphonies. (Remember that Beethoven is dead. The nine symphonies were finished.) He was writing (write) another symphony when he died. (This symphony wasn't finished, because it's creation was interrupted by Beethoven's death. When is a key word!)
2) Last Saturday Tom wanted to make two salads. He made (make) the first one in five minutes. (He finished this salad, nothing interrupted this action) He was making . (make) the second one when his guests arrived (arrive) and they helped (help) him to finish it. (The action of making this salad was interrupted by the guests arriving. But then the salad was ready with the guests help. here we have one interrupted action followed by two finished actions.)

Exercício para treinar simple past, perguntas, negativas e afirmativas. Esse exercício é um diálogo, vcs devem completá-lo conjugando o verbo corretamente e acrescentando o que for necessário. Depois o mesmo diálogo aparece de novo, porém sem as perguntas, para que vcs treinem também as Wh questions! Enjoy! (basta clicar no link abaixo)

For my dear students, as promised, I'll start attaching some videos and information about some great, important and famous people everyone should know about. Most of my students didn't have a clue of who they were when asked as part of an activity from the book.
Starting with Ray Charles (notice how his feet never stop shaking, just like your teacher's :))
And NO, he's not the one who played for Michael Jackson's funeral. That one's Stevie Wonder, another great composer, player and singer (this is one of my favourite songs) :

Sobre o aprender:
Aprender não precisa ser torturante, pode ser divertido e interessante. Conheço todos os métodos de ensino de línguas e acredito que nenhum deles sozinho é perfeito. É preciso buscar o que cada um tem de bom e saber aplicá-los de acordo com o que a necessidade de cada aluno em cada determinado momento pede. É preciso conhecer cada aluno, sua maneira de aprender, sua individualidade. Qualquer um pode aprender qualquer coisa que desejar quando se tem compromisso, respeito, paciência e vontade. Nas palavras de Olgair Gomes Garcia:
O motor do ensino-aprendizagem não pode ser o medo, a pressão, o sofrimento, a mentira, o “faz-de-conta”. Ensinar / aprender / construir conhecimento é um processo que só acontece na interação e na relação com o outro. O código presente na relação entre educandos e educadores tem que ser necessariamente o respeito, a compreensão, a colaboração, o compromisso, a seriedade, a confiança.

Sobre a língua inglesa:
Cada língua é diferente, afinal cada língua é parte de uma sociedade específica envolta por história e cultura, portanto, em constante mudança. Cada língua tem sonoridade e ritmo próprios e para entendê-la é necessário afinar os ouvidos. O Inglês não é diferente. A língua inglesa especificamente é uma língua simples em sua gramática e inteligente por evitar redundâncias. É uma língua simplificada em sua essência. Não se pode traduzi-la ou compreendê-la isoladamente do contexto. Cada palavra, cada expressão e cada gíria podem significar algo totalmente diferente ao mudá-las de contexto. Ao contrário do que parece, isso facilita sua aprendizagem, pois no fim das contas, a soma final do que se precisa aprender diminui consideravelmente. Basta observar em volta e pronto, se entende algo que a primeira vista pode ter parecido complexo.
